In this workshop, participants will explore the relationship between LGBTQ2SI+ communities and gentrification. Together we will look at everyday narratives about “good/bad” neighbourhoods, define gentrification, and consider how various forms of oppression surface in the neighbourhood. We will look at how LGBTQ2SI+ communities can be both complicit in supporting gentrification and victims of displacement ourselves. We will also look at local and global examples of queer and trans resistance to gentrification. As a group, we will generate ideas and tangible strategies for responding to gentrification, with a focus on supporting those affected by displacement and avoiding cooptation. We will end with a collective writing activity as an expressive outlet for the knowledge and energy generated in the workshop.
